If you’re a resident of Eastern Long Island with property developed before 1980, there is a very good chance that your underground septic system (cesspool or septic tank) is deteriorating or ready to collapse. It may be time to consider some repairs.

In earlier years, cesspools were built using cinder blocks and bricks and many of these are now collapsing or caving-in. Some of the cesspools built using these materials are unable to withstand the pressure and expanding and contracting of the systems.

If your property falls into this category, there are a couple of things you can do: 

• If your septic system was installed before 1980, be sure to identify where all the components are on your property and mark the locations very clearly. Be sure to keep all people away from this area, especially small children (pets too).
• .Do not park any vehicles in this area
• If you choose to work on these areas, do NOT do it alone. Cesspools can be 10 to 12 feet in diameter and up to 12 feet deep. Any person falling into a cesspool can be injured, suffocated by falling debris or overcome by methane gas and drown.
• Contact a QUALIFIED company to examine your septic system and advise them of any problems you be encountering with it. An engineer or licensed septic system service company could be contacted to work on your septic system.

Report Studying Green Sewer Collection System in Suffolk Released

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has released the final report detailing the impact of In-Pipe Technology Company’s professional, green sewer system services on the energy consumption and cost reduction at two separate Suffolk County, NY wastewater treatment plants.

In-Pipe’s technology was studied over a three-year period at two locations. The report documents that reduction in energy utilization by the facilities, the reduction in the influent organic loadings at the plants, and the significant reduction in the effluent nitrogen discharged to the percolation filters prevalent in Suffolk County (http://goo.gl/ynRRE).

This project was funded by both Suffolk County and NYSERDA. The major focus was the improvement of effluent quality, especially nitrogen compounds, as Suffolk County has a lot of small waste water treatment plants that discharge into infiltration bases and could affect the drinking water aquifer. For the two treatment plants, there were energy reductions of 14% and 23%, respectively.

“The opportunity to reduce the overall energy consumption for waste water treatment is profound using In-Pipe Technology,” said John Williams, President and CEO of In-Pipe. “This project spanned a period of four years and we are very grateful for the efforts and support of both NYSERDA and Suffolk County’s DPW staff.”

Public Meetings Held on Nassau Sewage Plan

Two meetings were held this week to discuss the Nassau County’s proposal to hire a private operator to manage the county’s sewage treatment plants at Cedar Creek, Bay Park and Glen Cove. They were held at the Elmont Public Library and Bellmore Memorial Library on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

These meetings were hosted by We the People Save Our Waters Coalition, Nassau County Legis. Carrie Solages (D-Elmont) and Legis. Davie Denenberg (D-Merrick). The forums focused on how the proposed plan might impact sewer taxes, the county’s budget and its debt, and how it could possibly result in usage fees.

County officials have said they hope to get at least $750 million for Nassau from the proposed public-private partnership with New Jersey-based United Water – the world’s second-largest private water systems operator. The funds would go to reduce Nassau’s $3 billion debt, including $465 million owed by the Sewer Authority, officials have said (http://goo.gl/4eqB3).

As it would be split between public and private, Nassau would hold onto ownership of the system that serves one million customers and the contract would stipulate that the county would continue to set usage rates. On the other hand, Untied would manage the Bay Park and Cedar Creek sewage treatment plants, 53 sewage pumping stations and 3,000 miles of sewers for at least 20 years.

What is a Cesspool/Septic Tank System?

A septic system is a mini on-site sewage treatment system that is installed when municipal sewers are not available.

How Does a Cesspool/Septic System Work?

Waste water leaves your home through a pipe called the main line. From here, it goes to the first tank (main or septic tank). This is where the solids and liquids are separated by gravity. 

When the waste is broken down, the heavy digested solids accumulate on the bottom as sludge. The lighter material called the scum floats on top. In the middle is the effluent. 

Your septic tank should be serviced at least every two years by a licensed septic hauler (as recommended by the County Health Department) to help prevent solids from entering the cesspool.

This will also avoid costly backups and repairs to the cesspool or what is commonly referred to as the “overflow” or “leaching pool”.
